Useful Cycling Devices

As a touring cyclist, I am well acquainted with the fact that almost all cycling advice and almost all cycling equipment is made for the high-tech, high-speed, ultra-light, streamlined cyclist. We hear of the need for cyclometers, cadence monitors, altimeters, heart-rate monitors, and combination devices that can record and print back the entire trip. But did you know that touring cyclists have their own high-tech devices? Here are some of them:

The Realometer was invented by H. Thoreau (a former pencil manufacturer) and is designed to measure the truth behind appearances. In 1968, Postman and Weingartner called this "an instant, built-in, crap detector." This device is useful for measuring the truths of statements such as the following: "This back road here's too dangerous, but that main road over there is very safe." "My dog snarls, but he don't bite." "It's downhill the rest of the way." "Turn left at the second light, go several blocks, and turn right. You can't miss it."

Just as you can conveniently record your speed, cadence, altitude, and resting, pacing, climbing, and maximum heart rates, now, with the Meteorological Max Kit, you can record all the meteorological data at the same time, maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, barometric pressure, and solar intensity. The company will even sell a program to allow you to statistically correlate all these events. Does a hot sun really slow you down or speed you up?

The Sunrise, Sunset, and Rainbow Recorder was designed to measure and record daylight phenomena the cadence-conscious cyclist can now without guilt ignore. The same company produces a Moonbeam, Starlight, and Falling-Star Recorder that measures and records evening phenomena the same way. Soon to be marketed is a wild animal counter for the Nature lover as well. This last device will keep up with the individual species for you, so you don't have to bother. It even has a roadkill switch allowing you the option of counting or not counting these animals (some people consider counting roadkill to be cheating; with others, that's all they've got).

The Automatic Panorama Device
detects any scenes that could be described as beautiful, scenic, or panoramic. This device has three switchable options: Alarm sets off a buzzer, so you can lift your eyes off the cyclometer and glance around; Record does not disturb you, but makes a record of the occurrence for a later trip report; Camera will work with an attached wide-angle camera or video recorder to capture the scene without disturbing your concentration.

The Blood, Guts, and Awful Flames Detector will set off a loud buzzer whenever you near a fatal traffic wreck, burning gasoline truck, or spilled train tank car. This was the one device I found to be unsatisfactory. I found I could pass two or three cadavers before it would finally go off. Definitely, the device needs to work before you get to the accident.

The Instant Poetic Inspiration Device is not as instant as the makers claim. Before it will produce a single poem, you have to hook it up to a PC or a Mac, and you must have a 233 processor and 32 megabytes of RAM. Nonetheless, the device did produce poetry that was judged as good and as understandable as anyone else's and did so without requiring one moment's reflection. [Note: the software in this device has recently been updated to make it compatable with Windows 98 and Windows 2000; it now requires a Pentium III and 128 megabytes of RAM and works nearly as well as it did before; a Macintosh version is no longer available.]

The final device is the Prevaricator. Certainly, no device was ever needed more by a cyclist. This device helps you expand your mind set, so you are equal to cyclists who are older and more experienced than you. If one says, "I have ridden to the top of Mt. Evans (14,100 ft.) in the summer," you can reply, "Well, I have ridden to the top of Mt. McKinley (20,300 ft.) in the winter," and what is he going to say to top that?

- Written by Ken Kifer , who tragically passed away on September 14 2003 in a bicycling accident

The Cyclists' Apocrypha

Originally published in Cycling Plus, 2001.

In the beginning God created the bicycle, saw that it was good, then went for a nice Sunday ride on the bike lanes He'd made the day before, and they were good too, because they were new and He had the angels keep them clear of debris. Later, of course, God would get cross and have the flood wash all the good ones away.

And God said to Himself, "Let us create man, because cycling is too much fun to keep to Myself," and so He created man, him did He create, create did He him do. And God put man in paradise, and commanded him, "Glideth upon the earth anywhere thou wisheth, except for that big hill over there. For on the day thou goeth down that hill, thou shalt surely die."

And God said, "Man needs a companion to keep him from spending too much money on new bicycles." So God caused man to fall into a deep sleep by asking him if he wanted to go clothes shopping at the mall, then took a rib from him. Then God said to Himself, "Who am I kidding, I'll never hear the end of it when she finds out she was just a rib," so He created woman from frankincense and myrrh and a certain je ne sais quoi.

And God said, "Let man have dominion over lathe drills and Philips head screwdrivers, and let woman have dominion over everything else, and as long as thou art naked and unashamed, thou might as well be fruitful and multiply."

Lastly, God created the chicken and the egg, in that order, which should clear up that matter.

Now the serpent, he was a wily one, and he said to woman, "Yea, hath God said you may cycle anywhere but down that hill?"

And the woman said unto the serpent, "That's about the size of it: go downhill and die." And the serpent said, "Ye shall not surely die, you probably won't even fall off. For God doth know that on the day you go downhill, you will not need to pedal for a long time. Go on, give it a try."

And the woman saw that the hill was good, she did not need to pedal for a long time. She told the man about it, and he also went downhill. Their eyes were opened, they saw they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves into padded cycling shorts because sometimes it got bumpy going downhill.

And they heard the voice of God as He was off-road, fully suspended of course, and they hid their bicycles at the bottom of the hill and started whistling nervously. And God called unto the man, and said, "Where art thou?"

And the man said, "We art down here."

And God said, "Hast thou cycled downhill, whereoff I commanded thee that thou shouldest not?" And man said, "C'mon, it was her idea."

And God said unto the woman, "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow whilst climbing hills; in pain shalt thou perch upon thy saddle."

And God said unto the man, "Because thou hast harkened unto the voice of thy wife, cursed is regular bike maintenance. The inner workings of the hub gear will be beyond thou to repair. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou service thy freewheel."

And God said, "Behold, the man doesn't listen very well," so he kicked him out of paradise and guarded the entrance with a sign of a picture of a bicycle in the middle of a red circle. And He had a Cherubim with a flaming sword stop by a few times a week for good measure.

This is the book of the generations. The first bicycle was a single speed, Godspeed, but after that it got complicated. Sprockets begat sprockets and cables begat kinks. Celerifere begat Draisienne begat Macmillan begat Michaux begat Ariel begat Bayliss Thomas begat Lawson begat Rover begat Boneshaker begat Ordinary begat Raleigh.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth in a critical mass, God saw that the wickedness of man was great and he did not like to give way to anyone on the road even his mother, so He directed Noah to build an ark made out of renewable resources. There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark every type of bicycle: one to ride and one for spare parts. And Noah gathered two touring bikes and two mountain bikes; two recumbents and two tandems; two road racing bikes and two cross bikes; also four unicycles, just in case there was a misunderstanding, and a brace of Bromptons, as their folded countenance pleasethed Him. And God said there might be Some strong winds in the Southeast. And it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, then drizzled for another fortnight.

And God remembered Noah and asswaged the waters, and Noah opened a door on the ark and set loose Japheth on a unicycle, and God said, "This is a covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature: that a man on a unicycle is a hilarious sight. The waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh."

A bit later, God spake unto Moses, saying, Here are a few ground rules, I hath numbered them for thou for easy reference:
I. Thou shalt hold no other races above the Tour de France.
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee helmets which cost more than £100.
III. Thou shalt not take My name in vain everytime thou gettest a flat tyre.
IV. Remember to oil thy chain, to keep it rolling.
V. Honor the Zebra Crossing and those walking upon the face of it.
VI. Thou shalt not ignore other road users, nor cycle recklessly upon the pavement.
VII. Thou shalt not steal bicycles.
VIII.Thou shalt not kill, except bicycle thieves.
IX. Thou shalt not hang onto moving cars.
X. Thou shalt not covet they neighbor's new Cannondale, nor his group set, nor his £3000 MTB, nor even his stylish shades.

Forget not the Titanium Rule: Signal unto others as thou wouldst have others signal unto thou.

And moving right along, there came four horsemen of the Apocalypse, and they were the Taxicab Driver, and the Motorcycle Messenger, and the White Van Man, and the Man Opening a Car Door Without Looking.

Amen

Tour of the Mountains Of The Moon

Annual Ride Report

This year we decided to do our annual spin to the mountains of the Moon in the fall as we had to finish our trans-Antarctic unicycle expedition in February, so we could get to see the mating ritual of the Campagnolo Penguin.

Peter Ptarmigan, Giles von Rundstedt and I headed off naked at dawn from the hotel and for the first 100 miles we had to battle our way through vast herds of Wildebeeste. Off to the left we could see a Tyrannosauras Rex stalking an insurance salesman and the sky was full of the sounds of rutting American Presidents. Presently we began to climb the Allthingsmust Pass, which starts off with a gentle 27% gradient but gets gradually steeper until at 35,000 feet we had to put on our oxygen masks.

We then began some serious climbing and as we were running out of fuel, we borrowed a bucket of Hershey bars from a passing Stealth fighter pilot. While we were eating them some yellow-tailed Lammermuir vultures passed by with loud squawks and we just missed being hit by a Pterodactyl who was carrying Paula Jones in his beak.

At 120 miles we stopped for our morning break and then descended the 45 miles to Allo Palto. Giles’ tires were so hot that when he got to the bottom they melted the tarmac. I was a little disappointed as due to a speed wobble I just failed to break the sound barrier, a feat which I have only managed on 14,157 occasions. We then went into a straight boring 237m stretch and stopped for a photo.

We popped into Paris for a large lunch on the left Bank with my old restaurateur friend, Marcel Mitterand, with whom I have been eating for 87 years. We then did a quick loop through Berlin and started on the foothills of Everest. Half ways up we passed Rudy Messner who was snowboarding down, surrounded by a huge herd of winged lesser spotted Aardvarks. He stopped briefly to have his picture taken with me and continued on his way.

I refused to sign an autograph for him as he had no technical qualifications and was dosing himself illegally on huge doses of snakeoil and lunar green cheese. Off to the left I could see the remnants of Alexander the Great’s army eating cookies and on our right there was a brown dog.

After a quick foray over the top of Everest we quickly climbed Kilimanjaro and as the sun was falling, had a lash over Mount Fuji, swooped down to the Dead Sea and arrived in time for dinner in Manuel’s restaurant in Tijuana. 14,157.12 miles, 135,000 ft but I never mention average speed as it would make you all feel even lousier than you already feel having read this.

The above was a piece written by Garry Lee, meant to be travesty of Jobst Brandt's legendary ride reports.

Saturday Stupidity X

An inanimate Italian female who goes by the name of CERA Pillone, has been linked to another breakup in VeloWood. Ricco's girlfriend Rossi confessed her secret love for the smoking hot nutritional supplement leading to the couple's breakup last week. This is the same Pillone that Ricco had been supplementing on last year, slurping her up with unabashed lust. This year, he has a problem with his others supplementing on her. What the fish? CERA was not available immediately for comment but she did release a statement a couple of years ago hinting that she loves to be dirty and caught in other's... urine samples.

In other news, prominent cycling commentator Paul Sherwin was caught red handed checking Phil Liggett's profile on Facebook and chatting with him, when the man was sitting right beside! Both may have to dig deep into the suitcase of spatial awareness.

And finally, the Radiostack, err I mean, Radioshack kit confirms why black still has most dignity. Failblog might be interested in this material.

A Shimano Solution To Toyota's Accelerator Problem

Dear Cyclists (& Pedestrians),

This is a notice.

Cozy Beehive is calling out a Worldwide Cyclist Death Or Possible Injury Alert For Immediate Make Officialling, also called WCDOPIAFIMO for short.

In the upcoming days, months and possibly even years, you will surely die or get severely injured out on the road if you don't stay away from something called a TOYOTA. Even worse, really old women with Toyota's. Now that can be even worse.

Steve Woz, the co-founder of Apple, has taken down many many individuals already with his Prius. Steve and his Toyota have both been arrested.

Meanwhile, we from the cycling community present Toyota's President Akio Toyoda with a temporary but bold suggestion to counter the car's recent misconduct on the road.

Mr. Toyoda :

All malfunctioning Toyota's should hereby be outfitted with Shimano Dura-Ace cycling pedals. Motorists have to wear Shimano's cycling shoes to clip into them.

The car is to be fitted with the same sensor technology that is installed in airplanes for stall warning. The Toyota's computer system, by way of an obnoxious Japanese voice, screams "Pull Up ... Pull Up!!!". Since the motorist's cycling shoes interface with the pedals, they can at once pull pedal with their feet to get the stuck accelerator back to neutral.

Shimano's carbon soles reduce excess weight needed to pull up with feet. Moreover, the carbon footprint in this forceful pulling up action is also small. All in all, an easy, green solution to a dangerous problem.

Thank you dear cyclists for reading this Worldwide Cyclist Death Or Possible Injury Alert For Immediate Make Officialling. And thank you Mr. Toyoda for considering this solution.

Fat Smasher Promises Thinner Endurance Cyclists

In a press conference yesterday open to a few handpicked journalists, it was known that the same company that brought out the AssBlend Saddle - Apologetic Technologies - now plan on launching what may be the perfect "instant fat burning" machine in the market.

The whole idea behind it? A gross, overweight individual who didn't know what they were doing while eating all that food is only to stand in the space provided (B, shown in the picture). A second individual, perhaps the first individual's friend or family member, holds a sliding member L, pushes it with all might, thus ramming it into the person who was dreamy of losing weight for upcoming cycling season. An attached computer display shows the staggering difference between initial and final weights.

"It's going to hurt," said a spokesman for Apologetic. "But that's the small price you pay for instant results. These days, you just can't compete at top stage races without cutting down your weight. Our method is so effective, you can whistle and fit into those cycling clothes you bought in your teenage years. Oh, another perk? This way, you can also fit into petite and aerodynamic recumbent bikes."

No comments were made on the weight of the gigantic machine or the retail price.

It must be said that Apologetic is no newcomer to this niche market. More than a decade ago, the company had loaned a working prototype of the machine to James Cameron for the movie Terminator 2. The following was the famous scene where the slim and sexy T-1000 used it on his fat 800 series opponent.

Dirty Jobs To Feature Contador's Summer Work At Astana

Yazoo! News : Mike Rowe, the charismatic face of Discovery's Dirty Jobs TV show, had been soliciting viewers for their own videos of dirty jobs performed by them in order to get new ideas for next year. And now it seems he has a finalist.

Pro winningest cyclist Contador and his management staff were browsing the internet on a Spanish beach 2 months back and had chanced upon Rowe's website. Which is when they got the idea of submitting Contador's summer work earlier this year in the Tour de France as video input to Discovery. Rowe confirmed this morning that he took a good look at the submission and just loves it!

Contador, the best cyclist in the world, had the worst job possible at the Tour when he was asked to serve a retired veteran on his own team. This came on top of the aspirations he had to bag another Grand Tour which made the whole affair a complete living albatross around the neck.

Dirty jobs for Contador included fixing the veteran's flats on the course, serving him meals and preparing tea for him back in the hotel while watching him play on his mobile phone. Not only was the psychological pressure high and team equipment/leadership not guaranteed to him, but he also had to battle the veteran's Twitter attacks while ousting him and others on steep climbs.

It didn't end there. While lifting the Tour trophy at Paris on the final day, he also had to engage the veteran's smirks and awkward facial gestures with a number of 'pistol rounds'. After 21 days of hard effort, it wasn't surprising he couldn't aim the invisible rounds correctly which made them go astray and hit a couple of Tour officials in the earlobes. The aggravated officials screwed up his day in return by playing him the Danish national anthem.

Contador has advised Rowe that to feature this particular dirty job on his show, hard hat would be a Giro helmet, work boots would be strictly white Sidis and clothes would be the old team apparel kept in a chest at home.

Rowe will spend this winter at a training camp with Contador. While plenty of hill climbing repeats are on the agenda, other drills include training the Discovery Channel man at getting the pistol shooting precise and returning Twitter attacks with competitive Spanish volleys. Sources say Rowe is planning to train an additional 5 hours everyday at the shooting range with bare hands. He will also be attending classes in 'Spanish Insults' at a local university.

Battling The Tour de Off-Season

Cattaraugus, NY

For many here in the northeast of the U.S, crusty golden leaves have begun to fall, signaling the time of the year when we must take give our a nuts a break off the bicycle saddle and gather other edible nuts for winter.

We are to find out our losses in upper body strength and try to "cross-sport", which must be like "cross-dress" to those 50-50 human beings, you know...to find out what the other exciting side of the grass is like.

After emptying the family budget throughout the year buying bicycles, racing bicycles and driving huge vehicles to buy them and then hauling them around like a Bedouin to race them all over the place, we are going to try new things, lust after new gear, and bring the family budget to negative on the number line.

We're going to spend night in and night out of Ebay worse than a prostitute in a red light district of Bangkok, bidding on this crankset and those wheelsets and that headset because our well, our headset up there on the shoulder is a little out of torque, we're not satisfied with what we have and think we could be faster with the fancy colored ceramic bearings originally designed for machines that churn out raw materials for society in excess of 20,000 rpm. Nope, we must have it.

Not to mention, such night sessions of Ebaying will take a toll on us as we gain weight each day by the pound.

Sometime later, we'll start the "training" again and buy loads of cycling books to read because turns out, none of us know zilch about mambo-jumbo like periodization and TSS and FTP and BSS and all that BS.

When the training kicks in, it comes in myriad forms like wind trainers and rollers and fancy virtual reality and scandalous indoor spinning classes. For those of us who can't afford any of the above, we'll just pretend to spin a high gear in the bathroom while showering and then do calf raises after that, and somehow get the impression those legs will get big in the hot water over a couple of months. You know, the air-cycling version of air-guitaring.

Oh and must I say, half the training mentioned above will be consumed in trying to get rid of the weight we put on in winter. The other half lands us precisely to the fitness level we started out last year. And then we walk proud and upright with an S-curve in the back thinking we are stronger cyclists. Note : This is not applicable to those of who air-cycled in the bathroom as most of them will slip and fall on their bottoms in soapy water anyway.

The final stage of this Tour de off-season comes when renewing races licenses and buying extra licenses and so on, just in case one got lost, voila, not to fear here's another one in my organizer. Cat 1, cat 2, cat 3...what's that mate...is that a part of the cat family? Do they snarl?

When all is said and done, its a great off-season and its the journey that matters, yeah?

By the way, why the heck do they even call it off-season? There's nothing off about this silly affair.

Happy Halloween and yes, have a great....off season !!!

Velo Taboo : Underwear Inside Shorts

Attention Cycling Noob,

Just where do you think you're going?? Are you wearing underwear, knickers, lingerie and ofter hardware under your cycling shorts?? If yes, just imagine someone plugged out a huge 8ft stop sign from the ground with utmost urgency and stuck it in your face while an elephant provides the mother of all trumpeting!

Wearing underwear under padded cycling shorts is like riding with your shorts full of broken glass. I mean, imagine someone exploded a Schott glass with dynamite and then slipped the remains from a laboratory funnel right into your shorts. Happy trails!

And we did not even get to the most important part YET.

If you've got cheesy flowers, Mickey Mouse and other nonsense on the underclothing, they'll show through your colored Lycra shorts which will obviously knock the person drafting behind you out of consciousness. Which will then knock the others behind them out of line and others behind them out of their lines... and so on and so forth, until you're all done with a wonderful zero mile ride and all you've done all day is collecting loose pieces of skin from the road to piece yourself together.

Oh..alright...maybe if you're the type of bloke who likes to shoot for a Nobel Peace Prize in microbiology, we might be able to understand why the multitude of fungal infections harvested from the bulbous boils around your nether regions are of any immediate use to you.

So unless you're the above, or you're pulling off a gimmick as an underwear salesman or just someone really bent on publicly exhibiting the variety in the underwear drawer, please oblige and do us all a favor.

While you're changing in the restroom, we'll be having a long talk with your mom.

The AssBLEND® Bicycle Saddle

Apologetic Design Technologies
Gentle Avenue, Koala Bear 73232

Dear Customer,

Congratulations. You've made the right decision in purchasing our newly designed bike saddle, the AssBLEND®.

We at Apologetic have heard your needs and bring you a product that meshes perfectly with your ass like a fine fitting coat, better than any other saddle on the market. Do away with ass hatchets that leave you with a feeling of being violated by a leathered cantilever.

To ensure you have the best experience with AssBLEND®, we will guide you through your first baby steps with it :

1. When you first bought the AssBLEND®, you should have obtained a big airtight box with the name AssBLEND® printed on it in shining gold. If this is not present, you have not bought our product and we suspect its a Chinese knockoff.

2. When you open our big airtight box in anticipation using the tabs on the side, you will find a lump of material in it about 3 inches in diameter sitting in one corner. It has a blueish tint to it and may seem like a moon rock. At the other corner, there should be a steel spatula. Right in the dead center, you should have been able to find this instruction sheet you read now, neatly folded and kept awaiting the grace of your eyes.

3. Where the bloody hell is the saddle!, you'd have snapped impatiently by now. Ah. We expected exactly this question from our research. Patience now. Continue to step 4.

4. The blue lump/ball is pliable. Take it in your hand carefully. Feel the ball slowly. It is soft to touch. Yes feel it more. Ok, that's enough now...

5. This ball is a result of 5 years of research and design in our chemical laboratories at Apologetic. We have designed it in such a fine manner that it possesses a time dependent pliability for 5 min the moment it is exposed to atmospheric air at 14.5 psi.

6. Which means don't just stand there!

7. Please rush to the bathroom with the provided spatula immediately and strip off your trousers.

8. Close the toilet lid, place the ball on it at the dead center.

9. Now take a deep breath, try your best basketball jump and land right on the ball. Hold it there for exactly 20 minutes. The material is designed to work with human body temperature and hardens while expanding at the same time. While you wait, you can flip this instruction sheet in your hand for some testimonies from some of our customers. To give you comfort while you sit on the lump, we have made the testimonies (un)settling.

10. 20 minutes must have gone by now and you should feel something hard against the rear end. Take the provided spatula and scrape this hardened lump off your ass. Move onto step 11.

11. We forgot to say something in step 10. Please scrape it off carefully. That spatula is a work horse made by an artisan in South America so it can damage your ass with permanent marks if careless.

12. What you will observe on the spatula is a perfect negative of your rear end, containing an accurate description of all its crests and toughs, down to the most minutest details such as hair follicles, spores and childhood spank marks. Get your hands to work and do some additional shaping to get it into a saddle form.

One customer's sample has been provided below as reference.

Sample saddle in rough stages before processing

13. For final processing, what we call cold treatment, take any seatpost you would normally use, stick it into the AssBLEND® at the angle you desire and place into the your refrigerator.

14. After 1 hour of processing, what you should get is a rock solid copy of your ass attached to the seat post. Lock it in place on your seat tube with an allen wrench and off you go - yes, go...take your first ride with it.

Notice immediately as you ride, that every feature on your bottom melds into the AssBLEND® perfectly. What you've done is broken into the saddle with your ass in less than 2 hours. This is the AssBLEND® difference.

DISCLAIMER : Any product defect is not our liability. It's your own fault.

How To Form Excuses On Horrible Climbing Shows

So your riding buddies trash talked you into riding some monstrous hills out somewhere in the exterior of civilization. But you've felt better on other occasions and boy oh boy, today is just not your day. If only bicycles were made like computers, we could all have an escape key before the bone breaking, lung chopping climb to hell. But there are no shortcuts to escape.

Hit hard...

So how on earth do you back up and slow down like a rock efficiently on the incline without hurting valuable pride and self-esteem in front of other people?

This, it turns out, is an easy one. Let me show you The Way.

Things you will need to carry in your jersey pocket :
  • -Pair of scissors.
  • -Wife's makeup. If you're a wife, then borrow your husband's makeup. Look in the garage.
  • -Cell phone.
Things you will need to carry on your back :
  • -A camelbak filled to the gills with water. (If it does not have gills, make sure you purchase one with gills)
As your attackers, a.k.a riding mates, slam down the pressure and leave you climbing slowly like an unattended VW Beetle, cleverly start launching the escape tactics. You may do any of the following or all for a combination excuse strategy (like those 2-D video game "COMBO" attacks)

1. Cell Phone : Quickly reach out to your cell phone and start calling people you never knew. Old uncles, old distance-relatives or grandparents are usually the best. They ramble on and on and on without direction and it won't matter much if you hang up on them. They'll never remember. Ask them questions about life and wisdom and pretend you're in serious conversation with the sage. Exaggerate your voice and follow your attacker's reactions. They'll turn back and look at you. Then they'll mumble amongst themselves in the distance, nodding their heads and acknowledging the fact that you're making a few business calls and that takes priority over climbing some stupid hills.

2. Makeup : Quickly reach out to the makeup box while your attackers aren't looking.
  • -Take a shade of gray or something and start coloring your hair on the sides. Use a helmet mirror for assistance. When your attackers look behind, they'll see an old, worn out friend struggling up a hill. But sympathy will usually turn to respect and disbelief. It is an unwritten code in cyclysm to encourage and respect an old dog who can climb.
  • -Take a shade of yellow and start coloring your face. When your pace is exactly below 4 mph and you risk looking like a dork on wheels, yell out that you may be coming down with a bout of Dengue Fever and you need to climb slower for it to go away. Pretend you're rubbing the disease away.
3. Scissors : So you're climbing like a dork today but you're showing off a kit that says 'Winner Of So and So Race' or 'Champion Of Ridiculous Time Trial In Town' or something along those lines. Kits musn't be shamed with bad performances from the wearer. It is a hurt to pride.

Quickly reach out for the pair of scissors. When your attackers aren't looking, snip away cool looking sponsor logos, titles, past honors etc etc...then form them into a ball and throw them into the bushes in the side. Make sure they roll off and away from sight. When your attackers look at you and spot your disheveled state, tell them you had a wipeout. "The front wheel shimmied!" They'll quickly slow down and come to your rescue. If they don't (jerks), they'll ackowledge that you need to climb more slowly because of this 'crash' they didn't see. Slow climbing performances will then be accepted without question. Onward.

4. Camelbak : Hydration forms the core of excuse making. Now don't get me wrong. This is not a hydration to quench thirst. It is a hydration to excuse forming. When the climb is about 5 or 10 miles away, quickly start slurping in all the water you can find from the hydration bag. Get to the front of your attackers. Then get off your bike and take a long pee. Start making a few whistles. Put on a grimace to show that its getting tight down there. Stay in that position for 3-5 minutes.

Your attackers will notice this and acknowledge that you slowed down naturally to take a difficult leak. You're not going to climb as fast as them. Atleast not today. They'll wait on the top of the hill for you.

Now that was easy.

But please be reminded that none of the above strategies will work if you see a road sign beside the official start of the climb that looks like this :

To your dismay, the advantage is now on the attackers' side. You either let the inevitable happen, or you slip out of your house in the black of night, drive your car to the climb, dig the sign out with a shovel and a flashlight and hurl it down a big cliff. Wear thick black leather gloves when you do this.
